an exhibition of textile art by Sonia Jacyk Bukata

Sunday, March 22, 2026 to Friday, May 22, 2026, Opening reception: Sunday, March 22, 2 pm - 6 pm

Shevchenko Museum, 1604 Bloor Street West, Toronto

The Shevchenko Museum cordially invites you to the opening of FOLKTALES AND FAIRY TALES, an exhibition of textile art by Sonia Jacyk Bukata, on Sunday, March 22, at 2pm, 1604 Bloor St. West, Toronto, Ontario.

Entering Folktales and Fairy Tales in the museum’s second-floor gallery, you are met with a visually-stunning, multi-dimensional sculptural installation of textiles.  With hand-dyed fabrics, frayed remnants, unfinished pieces, found objects, and natural elements, the artist collages, quilts, appliques, and hand-stitches her highly-symbolic creations and imbues them with the power of recollection both personal and historical.  Her intriguing surround of layered, textured, non-traditional kimonos conjures a world of mystery and magical spirits and invites you on a journey through that world of wonder, imagining, and memory.

A child of Ukrainian immigrants, fibre artist, Sonia Jacyk Bukata transitioned through academic studies, business ownership, a management career in women’s fashion to designing, making and exhibiting her wearable art, and by 2005, transforming herself into a fine artist. A winner of many awards, she has participated extensively in shows and exhibitions to great acclaim.

The Folktales and Fairy Tales exhibition opening will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Sunday, March 22, 2026 in the gallery of the Shevchenko Museum with the artist in attendance. Doors open at 1:30 pm. The artist’s wearable art along with other of her works will be for sale at the show which will run until May 22, 2026.
