Created between 1830 and 1861, over 1200 original works of art by Taras Shevchenko have survived to this day. Geographically related to Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Russia, they include portraits, compositions on mythological, historical, and everyday themes, landscapes, and illustrations for various publications and consist of oil paintings, watercolours, sepia paintings, pen-and-ink and pencil drawings, and etchings. Most of the originals are kept and preserved in the Shevchenko National Museum in Kyiv. However, the Shevchenko Museum in Toronto owns a collection of copies of Shevchenko's art specially commissioned and produced by professional artists in Ukraine.
