The Shevchenko Museum invites you to join us on Sunday, October 26, 2025, for The Ceramic Ornamentation of Mykhailo Zhuk, an online lecture, in Ukrainian, by Dr. Olga Shkolna, head of the Department of Fine Arts and Design at the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University.

Mykhailo Zhuk, born 1883 in the town of Kakhovka, Ukraine, was a painter, book illustrator, graphic artist, writer, and designer of ceramics. In 1917, he was one of the founding professors of the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts where he taught decorative arts. From1925, he lived and worked in Odesa where he taught at the Odesa Art School until 1953.

A prominent, multi-faceted figure in the world of 20th century Ukrainian art and culture, Mykhailo Zhuk was renown for incorporating folk art motifs into his designs for porcelain and majolica and often worked in collaboration with factories.

In her lecture, Professor Shkolna will discuss the various influences on and the  evolution of Mykhailo Zhuk’s ceramic ornamentation.
