PAVUK WORKSHOP
Guided by Artist Nadiia Voloshchuk
Thursday, October 16, 2025, 6 PM - 8:30 PM
Shevchenko Museum, 1604 Bloor Street West, Toronto
Learn to make a simple straw "pavuk".
Discover the ancient art of crafting a simple straw "pavuk", used to trap the bad energy and release good energy into the home. This craft harkens from Northern and Eastern Europe and can be found in most places where grain growing (and straw) is a key component of people’s lives. “Pavuk" means spider in Ukrainian, and is considered a benevolent presence-- thus these web-like mobiles bring good fortune and blessings to the home.
In this workshop, you’ll use wheat and rye straw, linen thread, and beeswax to create your own delicate pavuk. Whether you’re new to this craft or love exploring cultural traditions, this is a unique way to prepare for the holidays.
